Exploration of Theorems

Pythagorean Theorem

Student Access PIN: XQQVFJ

This interactive activity allows students to explore and understand the Pythagorean Theorem. Using sliders, students can adjust the side lengths of a triangle. These changes are represented both diagrammatically and in an equation, demonstrating to students that regardless of its dimensions, the Pythagorean Theorem always holds for a right angle triangle.

Trigonometry

Student Access PIN: KMYPIY

This step-by-step learning object takes students on a journey through the derivation and application of trigonometric rules. Beginning with an activity in which students adjust a diagram and observe how the angle changes, students then view an animation which illustrates the definition of ratios used in trigonometry: sine, cosine and tangent.

Area

 Student Access PIN: WADXUJ

This interactive activity walks students through finding the area of a triangle using multiple examples. Before stepping through each example, students are asked to estimate the area of the triangle in a grid. They are then asked to find the height and base of the triangle, and to apply the theory themselves. After applying the formula for triangle area, they are able to see if their predictions were correct, ultimately creating an interactive and unique experience for each student.

Assessment Tools

Pythagoras

No PIN Required

Although this link is not from the Learning Federation, it is a great interactive tool that allows the assessment of students’ understanding of Pythagoras. The quiz consists of questions ranging in difficulty from the simple recognition of the hypotenuse of a triangle to the more complicated applications of the theorem. Once students have completed the quiz, they are provided with results, and are given correct working and explanations for any questions they answered incorrectly.

Trigonometry

Student Access PIN: VKSSOH

This learning object is an assessment item, in which students apply their knowledge of trigonometry in order to answer questions. Students are asked to enter their names at the beginning of the task, and are provided with a full printable report of their results at the conclusion of the assessment.

Area

 Student Access PIN: HUBIAR

This learning object is an assessment item, in which students apply their knowledge of area to answer questions, using animation to label the height and base before calculating the area. Students are asked to enter their names at the beginning of the task, and are provided with a full printable report of their results at the conclusion of the assessment.
